Released Time Legal Issues
Released Time programs have been upheld as Constitutional since 1952. Even though the programs are held
during the public school day, they are considered legal because Released Time programs are held off campus and bear no cost to the school.
For more information on the details of Released Time legality, refer to the booklet in our
First Steps Pack.
Additionally, School Ministries offers a free public reference website that is designed to explain the legality of Released Time to school officials and the community.
This website is a useful tool that can be used even in the middle
of your program proposal presentation by pulling the site up on a computer directly in the school official’s office. Please visit www.releasedtime.org to find legal
details of having a program. This website even offers State-by-State Information so that you can see current state laws that may affect you.
